Time to Gear Up for ‘Veggie Era’ – Jus-Rol™ Professional

Caterers need to gear up to handle the needs of the rising number of vegetarians – or lose out with this important audience, Jus-Rol Professional is warning.

With National Vegetarian Week fast approaching the pastry people say caterers need to grasp the opportunity by being more adventurous in terms of their veggie menu.  

The Vegetarian Society estimates that there are between three and four million vegetarians in the UK and a growing number of people are now classified as either “meat-avoiders” or “meat-reducers”.  

John McKears, Foodservice Sales Manager from Jus-Rol Professional, says:“We are now in an era when the vegetarian consumer is having an increasing impact on the catering business. The fact is a growing number of people are following a vegetarian diet or else limiting their consumption of red meat and so they are often looking for non-meat options when they eat out. It is a growing audience so caterers need to ensure they offer them a more inspiring choice.”  

Recognising the challenge many chefs face when it comes to creating inspiring vegetarian dishes, Jus-Rol Professional has been working closely with its Pastry Perfect Panel to highlight the versatility of pastry as an exciting alternative to other carbohydrate based dishes. One such option is Jus-Rol’s Twisted Corner Basket, a pre-cut and scored puff pastry sheet, that enables caterers to create a stylish, ready-to-bake diamond case in seconds with just two simple folds. It’s the perfect basis for a range of dishes and will bring something truly different to vegetarian menus.”  

Using the Jus-Rol Shortcrust Oval as a base and lid for a winter warming pie recipe, Carol who is also a vegetarian, developed a Spinach, Feta and Pine Nut Pie with a Piquant Red Pepper Sauce.  

“Meat dominates pie recipes so I wanted to come up with something a little bit different. The feta gave the pie a great deal of flavour and I use mace which is a bit of an unusual ingredient but it works well with the spinach. The pie makes a popular dinner dish, especially with our female customers.”
